Residence Permit Employment (with residence visa D-2) 88.1

To obtain a temporary residence permit in Portugal under Article 88 Paragraph 1 (with a D-2 visa), there are several steps that must be followed.

Firstly, foreign citizens must declare their entry into the country within three working days to the SEF (Portugal Immigration department), unless they entered through a controlled border, stayed in a hotel or accommodation unit that submitted forms to SEF, or are covered by the EU legal framework.

Next, the applicant must obtain a NIF number, which is a unique ID issued by the Finance and Taxation department, by visiting the department in person or through a representative with a valid ID.

After obtaining the NIF number, the applicant must obtain an accommodation confirmation letter from the Junta de freguesia, which is the executive body of each municipality in Portugal.

The applicant must then apply for a Social Security number from the Segurança social institute, which requires a copy of the employment contract or a promise contract if the applicant is self-employed.

The employment contract in Portugal is regulated by Portuguese labour law, and includes income tax and social security deductions from the salary, which are split between the employer and employee. The applicant must then visit SEF for fingerprinting, and must bring a filled application form, passport, visa, NIF number, Social Security number, job contract, JUNTA certificate, criminal record, and social security payment receipt.

Finally, the residence card will be delivered to the applicant’s address as reflected on the Junta de freguesia certificate.
