Work While Studying in Portugal

International students, including those from non-EU countries, are allowed to work in Portugal with the authorization of SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras). This includes permission to participate in research work, highly qualified activities, and unpaid traineeships or volunteer work. EU students do not need a work permit.

Regarding education, all international students have the right to study in Portugal. The average tuition fee for international students is €3500-7000 per year. To be admitted to a Portuguese university, applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 years of education and have proficiency in English or Portuguese. Many universities offer courses in both English and Portuguese. To get a student visa, applicants must confirm enrollment at a Portuguese institute and show financial capability and intention to study in Portugal. The IELTS is mandatory for higher education in Portugal. Study gaps are accepted, but it depends on the university’s criteria. International students can also apply for Temporary Residency in Portugal.
