Internship or Post Study Work in Portugal

After completing studies in Portugal, non-EU citizens must secure suitable employment in order to extend their residency. They can apply for a work permit, which can be for employed workers, research workers, highly qualified professionals, or self-employed workers. Alternatively, they can apply for the EU Blue Card, which is available to highly skilled workers from non-EU/EFTA countries.

Cost of living, food, and transportation in Portugal is affordable, typically ranging from 350 to 400 EUR per month. However, there are additional fees such as embassy fees, insurance, flight booking, accommodation, consultancy fees, etc. that can cost anywhere between 1,500 to 2,000 EUR, depending on the services desired.

International students have the opportunity to study in Portugal, with the cost of tuition ranging from 3,500 to 7,000 EUR per year. To be admitted to a Portuguese university, the applicant must have completed 12 years of education and have a good proficiency in English or Portuguese. Some universities offer courses in both English and Portuguese.

To obtain a student visa in Portugal, applicants must confirm enrollment at a Portuguese institute, demonstrate financial stability, and show their intention to study in Portugal to the Portuguese embassy. IELTS is mandatory for higher studies in Portugal for international students. Gap years are accepted but depend on the university’s criteria. International students can apply for Temporary Residency according to Article 91 during their higher education studies.

After successfully completing studies in Portugal, an international student may choose to work as a self-employed individual or create a company for future business and stay in the country.
